Bloody delightful。 This is my first Dickens and I get the hype。 Funny, witty, wry, and I didn't find the sentimentality off-putting like some others might。 I'm also a "characters" person so to see the skill with which he crafts the most memorable of characters was enjoyable。 Pip, Joe, Miss Havisham; I loved them all。 I also tend to love all things bildungsromanian and Pip was the most endearing of narrators。 Not all novels and authors need to moralize but when they do I prefer they take a page f Bloody delightful。 This is my first Dickens and I get the hype。 Funny, witty, wry, and I didn't find the sentimentality off-putting like some others might。 I'm also a "characters" person so to see the skill with which he crafts the most memorable of characters was enjoyable。 Pip, Joe, Miss Havisham; I loved them all。 I also tend to love all things bildungsromanian and Pip was the most endearing of narrators。 Not all novels and authors need to moralize but when they do I prefer they take a page from Dickens。 He manages to moralize in a way that isn't stuffy or preachy。 Great Expectations had a clear plot that was consistently paced and filled with a colorful cast of characters。 Some of the writing could be a bit "fluffy" at times but the way with which he interrupts his wry and humorous prose with a brilliant and moving passage was more than effective:"That was a memorable day to me, for it made great changes in me。 But, it is the same with any life。 Imagine one selected day struck out of it, and think how different its course would have been。 Pause you who read this, and think for a moment of the long chain of iron and gold, of thorns or flowers, that would never have bound you, but for the formation of the first link on one memorable day。""But that, in shutting out the light of day, she had shut out infinitely more; that, in seclusion, she had secluded herself from a thousand natural and healing influences; that, her mind, brooding solitary, had grown diseased, as all minds do that must and will that reverse the appointed order of the Maker; I knew equally well。 And could I look upon her without compassion, seeing her punishment in the ruined she was, in her profound unfitness for this earth on which she was placed, in the vanity of sorrow which had become a master mania, like the vanity of penitence, the vanity of remorse, the vanity of unworthiness, and other monstrous vanities that have been curses in this world?"Not to mention all the romantic passages that had me absolutely gripped:"In a word, it was impossible for me to separate her, in the past or in the present, from the innermost life of my life。""And now, dear Biddy, if you can tell me that you will go through the world with me, you will surely make it a better world for me, and me a better man for it, and I will try hard to make it a better world for you""Out of my thoughts! You are part of my existence, part of myself。 You have been in every line I have ever read, since I first came here, the rough common boy whose poor heart you wounded even then。 You have been in every prospect I have ever seen since -- on the river, on the sails of the ships, on the marshes, in the clouds, in the light, in the darkness, in the wind, in the woods, in the sea, in the streets, You have been the embodiment of every graceful fancy that my mind has ever become acquainted with。 The stones of which the strongest London buildings are made, are not more real or more impossible to be displaced by your hands, than your presence and influence have been to me, there and everywhere, and will be。" Great read。 4/5。 Will read Dickens again。 。。。more

A wonderful novel that shows Dickens at the height of his powers。 All at once, a haunted gothic tale, a free-wheeling social parody and a paean to the power of human decency, this novel takes us on a whirlwind tour of 19th century England through the eyes of Pip, an orphan who grows from gullible innocence to sober experience in the course of an endlessly inventive narrative。

Such an abundance of greatness in this novel by Charles Dickens:To begin, that ending! (Yowza, but no way am I going to add a spoiler here。)Through and through, there's Pip, a relatable hero who dared to have those great expectations。As always, Dickens' characters were drawn with incomparable zaniness, just on the everyday side the caricature spectrum: * Cold, yet crushable, Estelle* Joe, the darling blacksmith* Abel Magwitch, the escaped convict* Unforgettable Miss HavishamSuch a great read -- Such an abundance of greatness in this novel by Charles Dickens:To begin, that ending! Great Expectations is the first Dickens novel I have read and it didn’t disappoint。 The protagonist Pip is a complex, but overall endearing character。 The same goes for most of the characters; they are original and enticing。 My favourite has to be Joe, Pip’s brother-in-law, AKA the sweetest human who literally deserves the world! I had picked up Great Expectations as I thought it will be a more interesting book than A Tale of Two Cities, of which I had read a few years ago。 While there is possibly more stuff happening, Dickens writing style is maybe not to my liking。 While he can describe key incidents in great detail, I have some problems understanding what is being mentioned due to his superfluous mode of delivery。Great Expectations can possibly be read as a semi-cautionary tale on how to approach things in life when g I had picked up Great Expectations as I thought it will be a more interesting book than A Tale of Two Cities, of which I had read a few years ago。 While there is possibly more stuff happening, Dickens writing style is maybe not to my liking。 While he can describe key incidents in great detail, I have some problems understanding what is being mentioned due to his superfluous mode of delivery。Great Expectations can possibly be read as a semi-cautionary tale on how to approach things in life when good fortune comes。 It also has an assortment of weird characters that are prominent in so many other Dickensian books。 While I feel that being suddenly rich does not give you the license to be mean, I am not too sure if my behaviour will be similar to Pip if I ever encounter "great expectations"。 。。。more

If Hard Times emphasizes the widespread, systemic impoverishment of the working class, then Great Expectations deals with the effects of poverty on an individual level。 Pip, our loveable, well-intentioned protagonist, begins his life in isolation, removed from society and brought up near a graveyard of low-rent gothicism。 Most of his family is dead except for his irascible sister, her mild-mannered blacksmith husband Joe, and a smattering of distant relatives who offer little succor。In a variety If Hard Times emphasizes the widespread, systemic impoverishment of the working class, then Great Expectations deals with the effects of poverty on an individual level。 Pip, our loveable, well-intentioned protagonist, begins his life in isolation, removed from society and brought up near a graveyard of low-rent gothicism。 Most of his family is dead except for his irascible sister, her mild-mannered blacksmith husband Joe, and a smattering of distant relatives who offer little succor。In a variety of ways, characters impart to Pip that there is almost something subhuman about his existence and that he should strive for something more。 But, of course, what he finds in the end is that the ostensibly better lifestyle of wealth and social decorum can be as empty and disconnected as anything else。 People are both cruel and kind in all stratas of life。I’ve yet to come across any Dickens that’s not fun to read, and this book is no different in that regard。 The humor is present in little doses and well balanced with an aura of mystery (via shady criminals and enigmatic benefactors) and moments of pathos that arise swiftly and suddenly。 Pip’s older sister often beats him with a cane known as the tickler that serves as a bittersweet symbol of the dark comedy of the times。There are a few issues。 I know Dickens writes in types, but some of the minor characters behave a little too predictably and their one-note approach to life and petty concerns can wear thin。 And there are a few too many cliffhangers。 Again, I understand the chapters were serialized first, but the conversations and character interactions are often engaging enough on their own。 The continual twists and turns almost belie a lack of faith Dickens has in his own writing。 。。。more

I didn’t love this book, but I liked it very much。 Great evolving story, influenced by the traits of human nature。

One of those dusty classics I've always meant to read。 I get the impression Dickens was paid by the word, as every sentence is too long, and repeated and reworded, without adding anything to the plot itself。 The plot is slow, and anything resembling a twist is plainly telegraphed prior to its reveal。 The characters are mostly annoying, which is rather the point, but it becomes grating after a while。 Joe, the kind blacksmith is the only likeable one。 I can only imagine this book's success is due One of those dusty classics I've always meant to read。 I get the impression Dickens was paid by the word, as every sentence is too long, and repeated and reworded, without adding anything to the plot itself。 The plot is slow, and anything resembling a twist is plainly telegraphed prior to its reveal。 The characters are mostly annoying, which is rather the point, but it becomes grating after a while。 Joe, the kind blacksmith is the only likeable one。 I can only imagine this book's success is due to its ambitious nature but unfortunately it didn't deliver for me。 。。。more

I never write reviews, but for this one I had to。 I started reading this and got 80 or so pages in before I figured I would digest it better via audiobook。 Fast forward to the last few months, and whenever I can’t sleep I just slip it into my AirPods and I doze right off。 I can tell you nothing about this book。 I am an illiterate cretin。

I found this a challenging read for today’s age since this book was written many years ago。 It wasn’t a very grandiose story, but the plot twists were definitely worth the wait。 Ms Havisham’s character is especially intriguing…

I’m so sorry but this book is so monotonous :(( It’s so tedious to the extend that I couldn’t read past half of it…。 What even is the inciting incident? Pip leaving his home???

Absolutely phenomenal。 All of these characters feel so real to me, Pip being one of the most fascinating characters I've ever met。 I love reading books where I can feel that there's more being presented than what I'm understanding -- I cannot wait to read analysis on this work and learn more about all it has to share。 Absolutely phenomenal。 All of these characters feel so real to me, Pip being one of the most fascinating characters I've ever met。 I love reading books where I can feel that there's more being presented than what I'm understanding -- I cannot wait to read analysis on this work and learn more about all it has to share。 。。。more

I’ve been busy defending a thesis, so this is the only book I’ve read in awhile。 I taught it to my 10th graders, and we had the best time with it。 I truly love Dickens。 I love the social commentary, I love the interconnections between characters, I love the mystery, and I love the dark elements。 I tried to read this book when I was in 10th grade, and I gave it the title of “the book I didn’t like so much I gave up。” I’m finding the more and more classics I re-read, the more I LOVE them。 Dickens I’ve been busy defending a thesis, so this is the only book I’ve read in awhile。 I taught it to my 10th graders, and we had the best time with it。 I truly love Dickens。 I love the social commentary, I love the interconnections between characters, I love the mystery, and I love the dark elements。 I tried to read this book when I was in 10th grade, and I gave it the title of “the book I didn’t like so much I gave up。” I’m finding the more and more classics I re-read, the more I LOVE them。 Dickens is brilliant, and I loved sharing that with my 10th graders。 。。。more

As someone who’s first language isn’t English this book was quite the challenge at first。 It was my first book by Dickens and even though it was difficult to follow along at first I came to love the book。 The characters are all very original and the relationships they form are quite intelligent; however, the story is very long and drawn out。Would definitely recommend reading other classical pieces of literature from this time, that are more accessible, before jumping into this one。

While reading this masterpiece, i was surrounded with different feelings。 I found myself smiling unintentionally a few times。 Besides, I felt like i knew Pip, as if he was my childhood friend。 The book tells a warm story and everyone should read it。

A classic story of how normal a boy can come out, despite everyone being downright awful and abuse to him。 I'll never understand Dickens' obsession with secret benefactors for young boys。Fun and terrible characters that stay with you for a lifetime。 A classic story of how normal a boy can come out, despite everyone being downright awful and abuse to him。 I'll never understand Dickens' obsession with secret benefactors for young boys。Fun and terrible characters that stay with you for a lifetime。 。。。more

Binbir güçlükler, uzun ara verişler, sıkıcı okuyuşlar sonrasında inat edip kitabı bitirdim。 Charles Dickens seviyorum, özellikle ince zekasının nüktedan dokundurmalarına hayranım, mizah anlayışına bayılıyorum ama bu kitabı okurken -son 80 sayfaya kadar - hissettiğim tek şey sıkılmaktı。 Öyle ki uykumun kaçtığı bir gece elime almam yeterli olacak seviyedeydi。 Gözlerim kaçarcasına kapanıyordu。Ama son 80 sayfada çok fazla duydu hissettirdi。 İki yerde gözlerimin dolduğunu da itiraf etmeliyim。 Yine de Binbir güçlükler, uzun ara verişler, sıkıcı okuyuşlar sonrasında inat edip kitabı bitirdim。 Charles Dickens seviyorum, özellikle ince zekasının nüktedan dokundurmalarına hayranım, mizah anlayışına bayılıyorum ama bu kitabı okurken -son 80 sayfaya kadar - hissettiğim tek şey sıkılmaktı。 Öyle ki uykumun kaçtığı bir gece elime almam yeterli olacak seviyedeydi。 Gözlerim kaçarcasına kapanıyordu。Ama son 80 sayfada çok fazla duydu hissettirdi。 İki yerde gözlerimin dolduğunu da itiraf etmeliyim。 Yine de çok beğendiğimi, etkilendiğimi söylemek güç。 Konusu ve durağanlığı bana hitap etmiyordu。 Vermek istediği hoş mesajlar ve Charles Dickens sevgim hatırına bu puanı veriyorum。 Belki okuyan başka biri benden daha çok keyif alabilir, belki daha bile az。 Ama böyle bir şeyler işte。 。。。more
